Hey hey :) lifes been super busy. And when i say super, i mean super dooper. Currently finished my first part of the Push Pull exercises, with my friendly monster/Alien Quattro.

Funny thing, he came about to me as a joke during my storytelling class. We had a bunch of cards with key words and i had to come up with a crazy story. It was about a candy-powered ship that kept what remained of the human race, after they left earth from the unbreathable amount of toxins in the air. The ship, led by an ex-speedboat racing Jamaican man and his co-pilot, Quattro, a fat alien that loves candy. Well. Quattro eats all the candy, used to fuel the ship that also generates air for the pilot and the humans to survive.... this leads him to manouver a crash landing and well, the story goes on :)

Anyways. Here he is in all his CG glory...

Updates updates. Well. Firstly, my entree for the 11Second Club has been processed. Unfortunately it crashed 4 days before i was to submit it, so i re-did all my animation on the spot to make the deadline. Not quite the result i was hoping for but i cant expect much with three days worth of frustrated work! It was rated 84th place out of 191 entrees, and here it is:

Secondly, I am still in Paris attending Gobelins! Its simply AMAZING. We are currently studying the physics side of creating feminine and female walk cycles. My current teacher is Frédéric Nagorny and boy does he know what he is talking about! His classes have been MINDBLOWING. heres a snippet of the whiteboard from the first lecture....

Hey everyone :) I know, its been a while. I have a lot of sketches from my christmas break i need to scan. But in the meantime, here are some bad scans (sorry) of some characters im developing for my next animation project.

I find that my drawings flow out much better on crappy notebooks during boring lectures, i guess i subconsciously dont want to ruin good paper. So on notebooks i just go crazy. Because i dont care. Dont. Care.

Fashion : Animating in Milan 2010

Hi guys, if you remember (or have seen past posts) I did an animation for Go-Dai, an Italian/Japanese fashion company that specializes in washi-fiber fabric. The first exhibition in Tokyo, sponsored by BVLGARI and FAI over summer of 2010 was a large success, I went, did a press conference, an embarrassing speech to a huge amount of people (around 150~ or more) with the lack of public speaking skills I own.

Recently, the exhibition had another opening in Milan. Currently open in two different continents, with a full fashion show and traditional japanese musical and performance show (including traditional geisha dances!)

It took place in Villa Necchi in Milan,Italy, where it is now open to the general public. It was a great success and I will soon post newspaper articles ect as soon as I get a hold of all of them.

The above picture is just a small portion of the costal villa from the 20th century, part of the italian patronage, in which the exhibition took place.

Those who know me, know my crazy obsession with Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I love it.

Heck, its what inspired me to get into this crazy field of frames, squashing,stretching and complicated computer softwares that keep crashing.

Last year, I went wild when Don Hahn, one of the producers of the movie (and inspiration to anyone interested in animation, thanks to his work on Beauty and the beast, lion king ect) signed the DVD.

Today, I go wild on the fact Steve Hickner, co-director of animation for Roger Rabbit, and Dreamworks director for, hell, who knows how many years, signed AND drew Roger on the dvd. I hope i didnt bother him too much, I half barged into the room. But I warned him beforehand. So hey, at least it wasnt a surprise!

RICHARD WILLIAMS, you NEED to sign my DVD. seriously. please. hahah.

So since May Ive been doing an internship in Tokyo for a design/web managing company, EcoTech, doing 2D/3D animations for industrial companies along with Website re-design and graphic alternatives. Im about to head to europe to travel, but Im now working for them part-time and the awesome part about my line of work is that you can easily work from home :)

My two biggest jobs were an animated intro to a website and industrial animation for an international solar panel company and similar work for a large dentist facility in Tokyo.

I did these two animations/designs in the past 2 weeks. I cant post anything from May but hey, better than nothing!

Ironically i also did another butterfly animation for another website. I say ironically because I sent the last month and a half figuring out how to animate the butterfly for my fashion animation in 3D. I thought i was done with butterflies. Haha.

The work wont go online until half a month from now or so, and is the only work im probably allowed to upload!

A talk with Don Hahn

Recently, I managed to meet Don Hahn, the amazing producer behind Walt Disney's most successful movies. He worked on The Fox and the Hound, The Black Cauldron, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Emperor's New Groove, Fantasia 2000, Atlantis and various others. He did a talk and answered questions. It was really very inspiring! I got him to sign my Roger Rabbit DVD :) Afterwards we went to watch his new documentary, Waking Sleeping Beauty about the what Disney was like behind all the fairy tales. Amazing guy!

Over this week I had the amazing opportunity to attend two talks by Kathy Altieri, and also talk to her on a more personal level regarding computer animation and certain life choices Im making (such as pursuing a business minor). Kathy Altieri was the Production Designer on the recently released Dreamworks feature How To Train Your Dragon. Her work also includes The Lion King, Aladdin, the Roger Rabbit shorts, Little Mermaid, Prince of Egypt, Over the Hedge and Spirit. It was truly an amazing experience to hear this fantastic person talk about her inspirations, what keeps her going, her techniques and understand how the industry I am trying to get into works on a better level.

OH! And she signed my poster! :)

The Rise of Futurism (Animation)

This was a project for my Communication Design class. We had to choose a movement, analyze it, and make three pieces reflecting a symbol, sign, and metaphor from the period. Three separate animations linked by the rising years. The first is the sign, a children crossing sign. Blown up by the ideal futurist war. The second was a symbol, a rotating bullet during a violent revolution against the machines. A symbol of war, bloodshed, and the end of humanity. And the third, a metaphor. "Light in a sea of darkenss". However, the darkness was humanity, and light is an even worse state, one overtaken by machines (shown through the eyes and gears) and without freedom or liberty (shown through the overtaking of the statue of liberty)

Over the Christmas break, I headed to SIGGRAPH ASIA 2009 in Tokyo with Lindsey Olivares, whom I had the pleasure to meet, and hang out with for a week or so, after her big win at Siggraph for her amazing (and VERY inspirational) thesis animation "Anchored"

Oh god i have been working on the drug animation for the past 2 weeks, with time spent going somewhere along the 35+ hours (i lost count). Yesterday i spent 6 hours to make 2 seconds of animation. Hand animated through paper on 2D tables, shot in Monkeyjam, composited with After Effects and some 3D work done in miscellaneous softwares.

Currently I am working on an animation for my Drawing class, an assignment over the use of narrative. It revolves around the act of overdosing, seen by the drug addict himself, within his own perception due to the effect drug has on him. The animation will be rudimental and traditionally hand drawn frame by frame (keep in mind i still have not started an official animation class, somewhat giving myself a few challenges) Heres a little peek of a tedious yet strangely fun piece of animation, as the last drop of heroin falls from the syringe. Not re-touched or processed properly yet. Hence, this is the first draft.

First Traditional Animation

Here is an UNFINISHED animation drawn frame-by-frame from a live model over two days. The animation was done for a traditional class, thus the teacher didnt know anything about frames per second. Hence, 16 prequisitory frames, over 15 frames per second, and the limited angles caused some choppyness that i will try and clean up. Also, hopefully ill be able to add a background if I find a facility with After Effects. OH. this is also my first official traditional animation. Ever.

SLEEP-A-ROO

Currently Im working on a giant sized Kangaroo. Its been about 3 weeks of late nighters (2-5am) before my 8:30 and 10am classes. I need some sleep man. Regardless. 90% done. First critique was today. VERY POSITIVE. Im very happy. The Kangaroo has a pouch that turns into a sleeping bag, thus allowing you to use the mattress-like body as the pillow AND back support. Making it highly comfortable. ITS HAND SOWN. seriously. THAT HURT.

Currently I am working on a few concept sketches for a possible children's novel!
Even if I dont get the job it was an interesting study. I spent a lot of time trying to make non-scary yet interesting "monsters" that may appeal to a child.

I particularly like the idea of a flower-tailed monster that although human-looking (complete with a funky mustache) walks like an animal.

Is it better in orange or white?
The original color was in between the two, but the scan made it
compleately white. In the orange you can see the strokes better.

Alrighty, so here are a few pieces I'm considering for portfolio. I have a lot of life (mostly nudes/poses from 4hrs-1min) but i stupidly sketched those on a sketchbook larger than A3 so i need to photograph them. here are a few pieces not from life.

these are a few sketchbook sketches done in the 12 hour flight from Tokyo to Rome over the summer. A Japanese woman actually payed me 10 euros to make a portrait of her, i refused the money and she shoved 15 in my luggage hahaha :D
